My thoughts
Jeff Simpson, the author, contacted me to review his book, Health Mind Soul. As the title suggests, the crux of the book deals with the improvement of your heal, mind, and soul.
In today’s world, there is an oversaturation of self-help books. Therefore, it might become hard to seek out the good ones in the process. However, Health Mind Soul stands out among the plethora of self-improvement books. Here are my reasons why:
The point of view is personal
Let’s face it. We, as readers, feel way closer to the writer when the words reflect a subjective undertone. While being objective is a logical way to point out certain situations, subjectivity gives a personal touch. It reflects empathy from the writer’s side. And in this way, the readers feel more inclusive. Jeff Simpson talks about his struggles and experiences in the books and gives us an insight into how he overcame them. In a way, it is motivating since he is encouraging us to take a step by holding him as a valid example.
Jeff Simpson also covers important and valuable topics like meditation, journaling, exercising, and gratitude – all of which are important to improve your mindset and relationship with others. The book showcases his personal experiences regarding all these practices and how they shaped him to be the person he is today. The impersonal emphasis is a plus point. He is not afraid to show that he is also a human like the rest of us and that we are in this together.
The practical solutions offered by the author
Do not get me wrong. I read a fair share of self-help books every year. However, most of them have a more theoretical narrative. Here, the author breaks free of this and offers a more practical approach. He is generous enough to give us the resources to aid our self-improvement journey. At the end of each chapter, there are worksheets to help the readers figure out the process.
There are two ways to use those worksheets – if you have the paperback versions of this book, you can use them there, or you can download them from the author’s official website here.
What resonated with me?
I am a massive believer in taking action. “Break the inertia and build a momentum” – this is my motto. Jeff Simpson does an excellent job in reflecting this. His advice ultimately boils down to the point: in order to solve your problems, you need to build a positive mindset and take action. This is something I believe in. It is the most practical advice one can give, and the fact that he keeps it raw and real is one of the reasons why I liked this book so much. Another thing is the author’s application of science to justify his views. As someone who prefers logic and reason more than anything else, reading these references from specialists in those particular fields is a plus point for me.
Final Take
There are so many things that he mentions which are close to my heart – for instance, journaling is something I am passionate about. Apart from that, he talks about creating a gratitude journal for ourselves. For the last few months, I have been trying that and liking it immensely. He also mentions the Law of Attraction philosophy. While I have heard about it, I never researched more into it. After reading about it in the book, I plan to look into it further and find ways to incorporate it into my daily life. His “Dream Big” motto is some I also follow. And I believe his viewpoint regarding this. We should not limit ourselves to just mediocre dreams. All of us have the potential to do better and be better. The road is rocky. For some, it is rockier than others. But it is not entirely impossible.
All in all, I am delighted to read this book. It is practical, discreet, and to-the-point.
Key Takeaway
The key to a better self is to demonstrate change. A change in attitude and mindset would go a long way to accomplish the life you have always wanted.
From epiphany to reality, I always say. You never know what will present itself. You just need to be ready and open to what comes your way.
