Last time, I talked about my distaste for Twitter and its short-form writing style. To be honest, I do not have any grudge against such a form. To each their own, but it is not suitable for me. While some people might prefer short-form content in the age of fast-paced life, it is not for me. While I am not particularly immune to Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts (after all, I am, but, a mere human), the constant availability of these content overwhelms me. So, I try my best to stay away from them whenever possible (mostly by uninstalling the apps/locking myself out of them).
That being said, it is no secret that I do love writing and content creation. While I am not a professional, this blog is exactly what it is for. I have reiterated multiple times how I perceive this blog as a small corner of the internet where I can showcase my voice.
Today we see why I prefer a blog (long-form content) to platforms like Twitter (short-form content). While more people have Twitter accounts rather than a blog or website, there is something special about it. Please note that all opinions are personal and while I am not a purist when it comes to blogging, I would just like to share why I hold the notion of blogs being superior. In the end, to each their own.
Without further ado, let’s start:
📝 More Detailed
The best thing about blogs is that they lack any character limit. Twitter has 280 characters. Yes, yes, I know threads are a thing in the app and you can always extend your posts like that. Blogging in itself is portrayed as a serious matter. We do not have to deal with any breaks when it comes to blogging. It is more of an expansive canvas where you can “pen’ down your thoughts and perspective in a continuous manner. The more detailed your post is, the better it is expressed and with clarity.
🛑 Exclusivity
A blog is considered to be more serious than a social media site. However, what helps is that a blog or website normally does not have any paywall to access its content. We cannot say the same for sites like Twitter. I love my little corner on the internet that is accessible to all. Anyone interested can know my views and interests and I am hoping that I can provide some insights to them just like many other bloggers do to me!
⌚ Timeless Appeal
During the mid-to-late-2000s, it was Facebook. During the 2010s it was Instagram and Twitter, and now in the 2020s, it’s TikTok. Am I missing something else? Oh, surely I am! But that’s what I am saying. Social media is like fast fashion. One decade, it’s Facebook and the other decade it’s TikTok! In comparison, the first blog was invented in 1994. 30 years later, we still have blogging going strong. There is a timeless appeal to blogs. An eternal dimension. And that’s what appeals to me a lot. Blogs are still here to stay.
So, there you have it. In the era of short-form content, long-form content gives us a more detailed understanding of certain concepts. While I cannot deny that short-form content has its advantages, the challenge to hold one’’s attention with longer written posts is something I find worth it!
